We need to produce more renewable energy in the future, and photo voltaics is one way to go. There are today good incentives to micro-generate electricity, using your own roof to capture the energy from the sun. But even though the prices have decreased considerably, there is still much confusion on whether or not this is a economically viable idea. There are many factors to consider when calculating the payback time for solar panels.
In this thesis proposal, we are interested in understanding the total cost of installing, connecting to the grid, producing and consuming electricity. How can we calculate on payback time in a way that is clear and transparent and make the calculations more user-oriented.
Possible research questions are:
- What needs to be included in the calculations of payback time?
- How can these calculations be presented/visualized in a user-friendly manner?
- Is it possible to provide results at different degrees of detail – what details can be excluded for clarity?
- Which platform should be chosen for maximum impact (web, app, other)?
